Organized May 31, 1862, by consolidation of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Regiments of New Mexico Infantry. Attached to Dept. of New Mexico, and engaged in operations against Indians in New Mexico and Arizona, and on garrison duty by detachments, at Forts Stanton, Goodwin, McRae, Wingate, Craig, Canby, Sumner, Marcy, Bascom, Union, and other points in that Department, during entire term of service.

1st Battalion Cavalry and Infantry
Organized from 1st Cavalry August 31, 1866. Duty in the Department of New Mexico and Arizona until November, 1867. Mustered out November 23, 1867.
Mink's Independent Cavalry Company
Organized at Santa Fe, N.M., July 20, 1861. Duty at Fort Craig, N.M., until October. Skirmish at Canada Alamosa September 25, 1861, and at Alamosa near Fort Craig October 4. Mustered out October 29, 1861.
Graydon's Independent Cavalry Company
Organized at Fort Craig, N.M., and duty there until January, 1862. Mustered out January 29, 1862.
Graydon's Independent Cavalry Company - Reorganized
Organized at Fort Craig, N.M., February 9, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21. Duty at Fort Craig until April. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Action at Albuquerque April 8. Mustered out April 29, 1862.
Haspell's Independent Cavalry Company
Organized at Albuqurque, N.M., July 23, 1861. Duty about Fort Craig until October. Skirmishes at Fort Craig August 23 and September 26. Mustered out October 30, 1861.
Vidal's Independent Cavalry Company
Organized at Santa Fe, N.M., July 12, 1861. Duty at Fort Craig, N.M., until October. Mustered out October 12, 1861.
Organized at Fort Union and Santa Fe, N.M., July 1 to August 13, 1861. Duty at Fort Union until February, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Duty in Central Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May, 1862. Consolidated with 2nd Infantry, to form 1st New Mexico Cavalry May 31, 1862.
1st Regiment Infantry - Reorganized
Organized October 1, 1863. Attached to Department of New Mexico and on garrison duty by detachments at Forts Union, Selden, Craig, Bowie, Cummings. McRae, Goodwin and other points in that Department during entire term of service. (Co. "K" at Fort Lyon, Colo., September, 1864, to February, 1865.) Expedition from Fort Craig, N.M., to Fort Goodwin, Ariz., May 16 to August 2, 1864 (Co. "I"). Expedition to Pinal Mountains July 18-August 17, 1864 (Detachment Co. "I"). Expedition to Pinal Creek August 1-5, 1864. Expedition from Fort Craig to Fort Goodwin, Ariz., October 1-November 27, 1864. Mustered out November 7, 1866.
Organized in New Mexico at large November, 1861. Mustered out February, 1862.

Organized at Fort Union and Albuquerque, N.M., August 30-October 10, 1861. Duty at Fort Union until February, 1862. Action at Valverde, N.M., February 21. Pursuit of Confederate forces April 13-22. Duty in Central, Northern and Santa Fe Districts until May. Mustered out May 31, 1862.
